CHATT – Chiroptera Acoustic Trend Tracking Project

CHATT, ‘Chiroptera Acoustic Trend Tracking’, is a long term passive acoustic monitoring project using Chelonia BatBug acoustic loggers. This project was proposed by Chelonia Limited and supported by RDUK. BatBugs are currently deployed for long term acoustic monitoring at three sites on the Isles of Scilly, St Mary’s, Great Ganilly on the Eastern Isles and Rosevear on the Western Rocks. Three sites in Cornwall at Mousehole, Mullion Island and Falmouth are running BatBugs plus Great Mew Stone, an island off Wembury in Devon and Lundy in the Bristol Channel.

BatBugs are based on Chelonia F-POD technology. The data files are analysed in the Chelonia BatBug.exe software package. Classifiers identify Freqeuncy Modulated, Constant Frequency and Quasi Constant Frequency calls.

BatBugs are zero crossing + amplitude ultrasonic loggers. Recording at 1000 KHz sample rate and running on solar power for a year or more. The BatBug software upsamples the recording to 4MHz sample rate. Data is easily exported for statistical analysis.
